CHEWIE

Artificial Resynthesis Technology (ART VII) is affectionally known as Chewie in the ChEW Lab.

It was funded by the NSF-MRI program (Thanks, NSF!)

It was built by the amazing Jose Antonio Olivares Treviño! Want your own Chewie? Contact him at [email protected].

The ART system was originally developed at the University of Minnesota's MDRCBB, and used for clinical dentistry and industry. Chewie is the first ART system to be used exclusively for paleo, paleoanthro, and bio purposes. Come join the fun!

Interested in using Chewie for your research? Here's some information to help you decide:

CONTROLLED PARAMETERS:
Total number of chewing cycles
Number of chewing phases (up to four available)
Number of chewing cycles in each chewing phase
Chewing profile (lateral and vertical amplitude in each phase)
Chewing angle (68 or 75 degrees for non-human and human primate chewing, respectively)
Saliva flow
Feeding sequence (i.e. how many chews before more food drops from the feeder)
Evacuator/flushing sequence (i.e. how many chews between flush cycles so chewed food is flushed out of the way and into the "stomach")
Temperature for saliva, maxilla, and mandible (to simulate temperature of the oral environment)
Camera options for video and images during chewing tests
Force recorded for Fx, Fy, Fz, and residual force for every single chew (.xls files)
